What are emotions and what role do they play in our lives? How do both positive and negative emotions help us function effectively? And most importantly, how will you, your employees and your clients benefit? In the workplace, a positive environment clearly influences the happiness of employees. 

When we are feeling positive emotions, our worlds tend to expand.  It is easier to connect with others.  Our horizons open up to what is good and what is possible.  Yet when we are experiencing negativity, our worlds tend to contract.  It becomes more difficult to relate to others.  These negative emotions dominate our mental landscapes, eclipsing thoughts of hope and optimism, and hiding life’s beauty and richness from before our eyes.

If given the choice, most of us would certainly prefer to spend our time in good moods rather than bad ones, the same way that we’d prefer to spend an afternoon in the park rather than in the dentist’s chair.  Simply put, positive emotions like joy, contentment, amusement, gratitude, and love…they just feel good.  On the other hand, emotions like anger, fear, and worry do not.  This is not to say that these negative emotions are useless.  But by and large, negative emotions cause us to languish, as oppose to flourish.  They keep us stuck in self-limiting, or even self-destructive patterns of thought.  They indeed drain the potential energy available to us that could otherwise be invested toward helping us thrive.
