One cannot overemphasize the importance of work to our sense of meaning (the emotional significance of what we do) and purpose (the impact we want to have on the world).

During working years, life satisfaction can be strongly affected by the level of meaning people find in their work. People tend to put more energy into jobs that they believe contribute positively to the world. They are also more resilient in the face of setbacks.  

In these times though, it is increasingly challenging to live a meaningful life. Many polls indicate that people feel that something is missing these days… that life has become too materialistic, that morality has waned, and the sense of community and social responsibility have faded.  The traditional sources that many people have relied upon for meaning, such as religion, political movements, and family have been weakened.  Indeed, depression is on the uptick and volunteerism is at an all-time low.  It has become more incumbent than ever upon the individual to create new sources of meaning.  Fortunately, this is where Positive Psychology can play a significant role, in helping us find to ways through which we can see our lives as having more value, direction, and purpose.

A sense of meaning can act as a buffer against the feelings of existential doubt and hopelessness that may arise during life’s most troubling moments.  Having meaning in your life can also act as a stabilizing factor during times of change and transition.  So it can serve as an anchor to keep us level during life’s inevitable ups and downs, and a compass by which to orient our actions during times of confusion.
